Nature Notes: The Hitchhiker

August 20, 2009

A couple of weeks ago, the morning after a heavy rain, I was about to leave for work when I discovered a large snail on the roof of my car (no, I didn’t get a snap of the guy out of his shell. Sorry!).

I tried to pick him off, but he wouldn’t let go. Now, I’m no fan of snails, but I can’t bring myself to injure a creature going about his business (except maybe a lubber). So I said: “Okay, little guy, guess you’re going for a ride!” And off we went.

Got to the office – he was still there. Checked at lunchtime – he was still there. End of the day – he was still there. Got home – he was still there.

Tenacious little doofus. By next morning, he was gone. There must be a children’s story in there, somewhere…

I would have been concerned he would bake himself to my car in the hot sun. I'm glad he didn't become a permanent fixture. Snails are gross. I wouldn't want to hurt anything either. But snails are just gross!

I can't believe he made it through the whole day, in the sun! Tenacious little bugger.

If you ever find out the story behind it, please let me know.Since I have a snail returning to my storage room (Hungarian building isn't solid, it sneaks through underneath the door) since a few months. No, I'm not kidding.I take it out, throw it in the neighbours yard. After a while it's back.Only one. Sigh.

Awwww RJ..that is so sweet that you left it there and didn't cook it up in garlic and olive oil..or whatever people cook snails in…Can you imagine the story he has to tell all the other snails….

It is amazing that he made it "there and back again." What a tale he'll have to tell the other snails. It's funny you should write about this today. I was just thinking about snails on my way home today; I haven't seen one in many years, and I was wondering why.

Love your tenacious and then disappearing snail. Once upon a time, in another dimension, there was a snail who searched for a good cup of coffee…
