Bits ‘n Pieces

January 14, 2009

There are so many potential posts rattling around in my brain at the moment that it’s difficult to pick one topic. But there are lots of things that probably don’t justify an entire post to themselves, or maybe do, but right now I just want to throw some stuff out there. And so, the first Bits ‘n Pieces for 2009:

Just a quick – and most likely last – update on Amedeo Cuomo. Father and son returned home, here in South Florida, a couple of days before Christmas. They are well and happy. An actual case of “all’s well that ends well”. And I hope it stays that way. Someone should have a happy ending, dammit.

You know where my head is, when MJ asked me this morning, “Who won the election, yesterday?” and my first instinct was to reply, “Cute Overload“. Of course, he was referring to our local city commission special election. I was thinking the 2008 Weblog Awards. Thank god I paused a beat before responding, ” I haven’t checked yet.” I think he probably would have had me committed.

One of my coworkers passed away over the weekend and the funeral was Monday. She’d been ill on and off for the last couple of years – first breast cancer (which she beat), then apparently liver cancer (which she didn’t, probably because she just absolutely refused to go through chemo and its associated side-effects again). We weren’t terribly close, but we had several things in common:

1) She was a take-charge kind of gal, and always offering to help out with anything. Nothing was beneath her;

2) Although she is Cuban (brought here as a baby), her sister married a Jewish guy and converted. Some of our most spirited debates were over the qualities of the perfect matzo ball; and

3) A few years back, she decided to get a cat. His name is River and she loved him almost as much as her husband, I think. We had many conversations about what our kittens – then cats – had gotten into, their quirks and habits, etc. Neither of us has children, and this was comparable to what you parents of little ones do on a regular basis. I will miss her.

I have had this hanging on the wall of my office cubby since July 2004. It was sent to me by a close friend who is an Assistant State Attorney – a prosecutor. The source amused me nearly as much as the graphic.

Most particularly, I like the stripe in the upper right-hand corner. The man admitted his crimes regarding complicity in the use of torture on detainees, and how nobody gave a rat’s ass whether or not the intelligence was good about WMD’s in Iraq – we were sending troops there – in media interviews. What I have said since before the 2000 election – “If Bush becomes president, we will be back in Iraq. Mark my words.” Nobody listened to me. He confessed. Without the kind of torture he was responsible for inflicting. “Cheney Begins Prison Term” Sweet dreams.

    I took a watch to be shortened for my daughter’s birthday and got a load of garbage from the repairman. I swear I was looking for his white robe and a burning cross in his shop. He finally said, I bet you are one of those educated liberal types..I said that yes I was and left..damn idiot..
